Leg 5 - Canoe / Kayak

Description

The boaters paddle upstream from put-in point for .8km on the Deschutes River to the Healy Bridge then back downstream for 1.2km, then back upstream for .4km to the sprint exchange. Any float worthy craft that does not have oarlocks is legal. Dress appropriately, the Deschutes River can be cold in the spring. Flotation devices are required.

The start of the Canoe/Kayak leg will be a chute system similar to the Alpine/Cross Country Exchange and the Cross Country/Bike Exchange. For example, if you used the “B” chute (Bib ending in #2-3) for the ski exchanges your boat will be in the “B” chute at this exchange. The course is .8 km upstream to the turnaround buoy under the Healy Bridge, then downstream 1.2 km around the island (stay to your right of the island), and back upstream to the Canoe/Kayak finish (~150 yards downstream of the put-in). Sun Country Tours and Cascade River Adventures will have rafts and guides to monitor the course and assist in an emergency.
