The distance everyone had traveled that day to meet with us was significant - and appreciated deeply. We gathered together over dinner at a local restaurant, while enjoying the warm company from "Home".  At one point, we were asked for ID's – spurring a scramble through pockets and wallets. Ultimately, this required a trip back to the hotel where everyone was staying for the night – but Dad Davis, adventurous spirit that he is, was more than willing to make the trip. Coffee topped off a wonderful evening.  Monday November 5th Karen, Ben, and I got off to a 4 A.M. start; today, Ben was aiming for 34 miles on the Trail. Together Karen, Ben and I worked together like a finely tuned machine in order to get everybody breakfast, out of the hotel and back on the trail by 6 A.M. After our early start, Karen made the trek back to school (the hospital) where she is studying to become an X-Ray technician; (this is a very specialized skill, as you can imagine, and she's been pouring herself into her studies. Go Karen!) Without Karen's company, I decided to take a moment to plug into the daily news on TV. I was instantly drawn in by the 2008 election coverage - very interesting to watch....who will win? Around 8 A.M., Tom and Karen, (Ben’s parents) and I went downstairs for breakfast....again!  We talked over coffee about all things under the sun – and I felt a bond was formed between us. Soon enough, we had to say our goodbyes and continue on our way. Ben and I met up at our rendezvous that evening after he had completed the mileage for the day. After a short transition from the Trail (changing clothes, taking in liquid, food), we drove to The Skyland Resort where we were to eat dinner with Melissa, a future ultra runner, and friend.  We were absolutely thrilled to see a wood-burning fire ablaze – and posted ourselves beside it. After catching up on all things 2175 – Ben and I went to the parking lot that overlooked Shenandoah National Park only to find the most awesome sunset lighting up the horizon.  Words could not express…. just layers and layers of colors upon colors.  Melissa’s arrival was a great boost to our spirits and we were glad share dinner with a friend. We are so encouraged by people spending time with us – it really is the ultimate way to show your support.  Sadly, the time for “hanging out” off the trail will lessen and lessen as Ben approaches the finish line.  He is less than 900 miles away. The time is now.  Ben is taking things to a higher level as he will be averaging 40 miles a day up until the finish.  His schedule will basically consist of, Wake up 4 A.M. eating, and heading to Trail between 5-6 A.M., depending on where we are camped. He will then trek for 14 hours, eat dinner, and go to bed early, between 7-8 P.M.   Please understand that Ben will have plenty of availability after he finishes in order to catch up and visit.  Your comments are the best way for us to receive your much appreciated well wishes!
